MArtial Arts Convention in Orlando
We are back!!! It was an awesome experience to train and talk to so many world champions, and world class instructors. People like Matt Hughes, Bill Wallace, Joe Lewis, Dan Severn, Mike Swain, David Meyer, John Will, Fumio Demura, Master Toddy, Ricardo Liborio, Mike Chat and many more. For us Instructors it was fun to go back to the convention and for students Juan Carlos Nava Jr. Alejandro Nava, Alexia Nava, and Anagaby Lozano was an awesome first time experience (they already wan to go back for the next year convention). We brought back many great ideas and programs like the Mixed Martial Arts for kids and the Ultimate Body Shaping Course that will start on August. Once again Martial Arts America stays on top as the only school from Laredo to attend this seminars in order to bring our students the best in martial arts.
To all our students and Family I will like to invite you to participate in our summer camps. Thru the Month of June from Monday Thru Friday we will offer classes.
The cow drinks water and that water turns into milk, The snake drinks water and that water turns into poison. You should learn martial arts to become a healthier, smarter, stronger and better person, not a bully. How you use your knowledge makes a big difference like the difference between the milk and the poison.
Count to ten, relax, ignore the person, etc. They are all valid, but the best thing you can do is pre-frame yourself never to allow anybody to make you angry. Just think about it, when you allow somebody to make you mad, you are allowing them to control your emotions. When you get mad you are the one that suffers, not the person that is making you mad (sometimes this person is not even doing it on purpose). If this person's actions are really bothering you, use intelligence (not anger) to solve the problem . Don't give anybody the control of your emotions is not worth it.
I'm proud to tell you that we made a deal with Kono magazine the only martial arts magazine for kids. The Magazine will be FREE for Martial Arts America students only. You can pick up the magazine at our school. Please enjoy.
The kids learned safety tips for this halloween. As always Martial Arts America is concerned about the kids safety. Therefore, we implemented this seminar, after the seminar, the kids play games, ate pizza and spent time with friends. Thanks to all the participants.

Testimonial: Master Nava,
Finally...Katas that make sense! I can't tell you how pleased I am to be able to replace the "traditional" katas we have used at our Academy for the last 20 years with your self defense katas. They are practical and easy to learn. My students and I really appreciate the work you've put into creating them. I recommend these forms to any school that wants to practice techniques that students can really use. I know they are helping with our retention. Thank you.

Alfonso Tellez is back from vacations in his hometown Queretaro. Eventhough he was out for two months and he is very young, he still remembered his techniques (I guess he practiced daily). He was able to test for his orange belt, so congratulations and Welcome Back !!!!
Danny Trevino is back from New Mexico (where he was training for Border Patrol Agent). He lost 30 pounds but he still over 300 lbs. so we are going to struggle to fight him, specially because he is faster now. Anyway, is nice to have him back an excellent training partner and a better friend.
This weekend master Borowitz (McAllen),master Payne (San Antonio) and myself got together in Laredo with some of our black belt students to practice and exchange ideas. We practiced two hours on Friday and four hours on Saturday. From Taekwondo, to hapkido to brazilian jiujitsu to pressure points the practice was awesome, we are planning to this more often as it will improve our technique and strenghten our friendship.
A Parent Asked me: Should I force my child to take karate classes if she doesn't want to?
Well. first lets analize why is the child saying she doesn't want to go to class. Is it only today? Is she doing something fun at home? Is she tired? sleepy? bored? or she just doesn't feel like putting her uniform on? I beleive that at some point every black belt didn't feel like going to class on a particular day or days. However, they continued and reached the Black Belt. If the child doesn't feel like going to class on a particular day is not a big deal negotiate with her to go another day of the week (if possible), that is why in our school we offer a flexible schedule 6 days a week. Some questions you should ask yourself are: What is the child doing at home? Is it something beneficial? If she quits karate what is she going to do with the free time? Is it an activity you approved or she just want to be lazy or play video games? I had a student who quitted my school but went on to become a professional soccer player in that case he prefered another activity that was also beneficial for him. Sadly some students quit just to stay home and do nothing. Don't use the word force when it comes to helping your child make a better decission. However, if you think karate is good for her and one day she is just being lazy and you have to force her to come to karate, there is nothing wrong with that. Don't you some times have to force her to take a shower, go to bed, eat her vegetables, etc?
Recently, I have been approached by some parents that beleive that their child is not ready to test or simply should not test. While this is a valid concern from the parents and eventually they will decide on testing or not, the only person that really knows if the child is ready or not is the instructor(s). Lets take this scenario to any elementary school. Math teacher says: "please study over the weekend because there will be a test on Monday" Can you ask the teacher to test your child another day because you think he/she is not ready? Of course not. If you are not ready you study harder, put extra time, get a tutor, etc. At Martial Arts America we are willing to teach FREE private classes or offer alternative schedules for the students that don't feel ready. Nevertheless, all stuednts should try to test when the time comes. When Jigoro Kano (founder of Judo) created the color belt system, he also invented a powerful motivational tool. Changing belts makes the students feel they accomplished something and it teaches to reach and set goals in life. Don't take this away from your child or yourself.
I will like to congratulate all the students that tested and passed to a new belt. Remember a journey of 1000 miles starts with a single step. Students with the highest scores:
